Kentucky Chapter

We are 6,000 members and supporters in Kentucky, working together to protect our communities and the planet. We are a part of the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the nation, with more than three million members and supporters. 

With six regional Local Groups and more groups coming soon, you are sure to find a group of environmental champions in your own backyard. Join us in our mission to protect the air, land, water, and wildlife throughout this beautiful state. We are only as strong as our people-power! Environmental justice, the fair treatment of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies, is a part of our mission. 

In Memory of Wendell Berry, 1934–2026

Wendell Berry spent sixty years teaching that protecting wild places and protecting the working landscapes where people live are the same struggle — a vision that reshaped how Sierra Club members think, organize, and fight for home. For nearly fifty years he spoke out against the coal industry's assault on Kentucky's mountains, building the moral tradition Kentuckians are standing on today as they push back against the unchecked spread of data centers across the state. Sierra Club Kentucky has nominated him for the Sierra Club's Rachel Carson Award for Excellence in Environmental Writing, to be announced October 14, 2026. [Read our full tribute to Wendell Berry →]

For Love of the Land: Wendell Berry in Sierra Magazine, 2002

In the May/June 2002 issue of Sierra, Wendell Berry wrote about spending his life on two losing sides, the farmer's and the conservationist's, and argued that they belong on the same side. His case: anyone who cares about wild places has to care about how food is grown, and farmers and conservationists face the same common enemy and need to start talking to each other.
