It’s difficult to completely imagine what life would be like without water. Water is life, and all creatures’ and communities’ survival depends on it. In California, we rely on only a few water resources, and sometimes our demands are at the expense of our environment.
There are no easy or fast fixes for this problem, but you can count on your Loma Prieta Chapter to continue to defend our local environment and its resources for future generations.
As you can count on us, I trust that we can count on you. In the past, you have demonstrated your commitment to our local environment, and your gifts helped us face challenges in past years. Today, I’m asking you to continue standing with our teams as they dedicate their expertise, skills, time and passion to protect our regional environment, by donating $35, $70, $250 or more.
Your support empowers your Loma Prieta Chapter to be bold, heard by and influential with decision makers. With you at our side more is possible, and we pledge to continue our grassroots advocacy for the best sustainable solutions to the water challenges we face.
We will continue fighting against the California WaterFix, which if built, will threaten the health of the already overdrawn Sacramento River, and damage the biosystem of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
We will continue advocating for better protection of our local waterways, including the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek in San Jose, in response to rapid development, as well as monitor new developments close to these water resources to ensure that riparian corridor setback regulations are respected.
We will continue working for the permanent protection of Coyote Valley, which is a natural flood control area and an important resource for our region. In 2018, we successfully advocated for the adoption of Measure C to prevent possible destructive development in the Valley. Now, we are advocating for maximum funds from the recently passed Measure T to permanently protect the area with its watershed, wetlands, and groundwater.
We will continue pressing Lehigh Cement Plant to fulfill the 2013 lawsuit settlement, which your Loma Prieta Chapter spearheaded. The Plant has yet to build the required water treatment facility to protect Permanente Creek.
Additionally, we pledge to put your gift to work by:
- promoting well-designed bikeable and walkable communities, to prevent city sprawl into the remainder of our open space, to save wildlife habitat and water resources, as well as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
- ensuring that our environment has knowledgeable and skilled advocates ready to take a stand when needed, with more than 30 new environmental advocates trained annually,
- shaping better environmental policies by researching and interviewing scores of candidates and endorsing only the best environmental leaders running for office,
- enabling thousands of people to explore the riches of our local outdoors and inspiring them to protect it, through more than 600 of outings for 10,000 participants annually,
- fighting in court to protect our local environment, when all advocacy fails, since we do sue those who want to destroy our natural treasures.
The Loma Prieta Chapter is known for its effectiveness because of people like you. Only together can we continue to realize our mission and to face the environmental challenges in our region.
