Thank You Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg!
On May 21, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors amended the County’s goals for Environmental Stewardship, adding language to “develop educational programs and volunteer service opportunities that promote local stewardship of streams and riparian corridors.” The Supervisors also added language to “develop programs of ecologically compatible recreational use of streams and riparian corridors.” The County will seek out potential partnerships and meet the appropriate requirements towards these ends, including staffing and mandating changes within the parks and recreation department. We thank Supervisor Susan Ellenberg for her initiative on this important issue. |

The Loma Prieta Chapter is proud to have established our Gay & Lesbian Sierrans outing section (GLS) in 1991.
Your Chapter Director was honored to have participated in the Loma Prieta GLS 25th Anniversary outing in 2016, lead by a GLS founder Mike Zampiceni, and to have participated in every GLS Anniversary Picnic since, including this year, June 1st in Sanborn County Park (photo above), which was particularly significant because it marks the 50th anniversary of the New York City police raid on the Stonewall Inn, that launched the Gay Rights Movement. |
Second LGBTQ Shelter in US Celebrates Grand Opening in San José.
New Haven Inn, the second LGBTQ-focused shelter in the country, recently celebrated its grand opening in San José. The shelter for homeless adults is located south of Downtown. The facility houses and provides supportive services for up to 20 people per night.
The San José City Council has approved the Housing Department's Annual Action Plan, which outlines how the City will allocate $30 million in federal funds to enable the City to deliver potentially life-saving services to thousands of vulnerable San José residents.
While the plan won't solve every housing challenge the City faces, it empowers the City to help residents in need of assistance to put roofs over their heads and food on their tables, and live dignified lives. The Annual Action Plan provides a foundation for us to make a real difference in the lives of our most vulnerable residents!

Land Art Scavenger Hunt
Andy Goldsworthy is an environmental, site specific, land artist with 5 installations nearby. His inspiration is drawn from place and he uses found materials like twigs, leaves, stones, snow, and ice to create. His works are meant to erode and return to dust. Stone River can be found outside the Cantor Arts Museum at Stanford: https://news.stanford.edu/features/2014/loma-prieta/stoneriver.html. In San Francisco, the de Young Museum has Drawn Stone about the impact of the1989 Loma Prieta earthquake on the museum: https://www.famsf.org/roundware/deyoung/goldsworthy. Your local Loma Prieta Chapter does all the local conservation work, but receives less than 20% of the membership dues which you pay to Sierra Club National, so your local donations are critical to support our effective local work in conservation, public education, environmental politics, and outings.

Did you join the Sierra Club to make a difference for our environment?
There are many ways to become a local environmental hero!
1. Volunteer by joining one our local conservation teams, or political action teams, or environmental education teams, or outings teams.
2. Volunteer as a Social Media Coordinator
You don't need to be an expert. You'll be provided all content and only need to post on a regular basis. Commitment is 2-3 hrs per week. See all our channels and opportunities listed below.
3. Volunteer as an Environmental Writer/Reporter
Commitment is 2 - 10 hours per week.
The Loma Prieta Chapter has done and is doing an incredible amount of conservation work, but while our conservation activist are busy doing the work, we need reporters to write about it. If you are interested in this impactful opportunity to investigate and explain local conservation, write to chapter.director@lomaprieta.sierraclub.org.
