San Jose Electrifies its Buildings
On July 10th, San Jose unveiled their draft building electrification code in a public meeting. The code encourages all-electric buildings by increasing energy efficiency standards and includes measures to increase solar and EV charging infrastructure. This code (called a "reach code") applies to new construction, and will likely be heard by the City Council in September.

Berkeley Considers a Gas Ban
This ordinance would ban natural gas in new construction, and is set to be heard by Berkeley City Council on July 16th. This will be the first of two votes required to pass the ordinance. If successful, this landmark law could become a beacon for future efforts to reduce greenhouse gasses and make buildings more affordable. |
Don't Build on Redwood City's Salt Ponds
In light of Cargill and DMB’s renewed efforts to build in the Bay, we urge you to follow Mayor Ian Bain's lead and state publicly that you have no interest in changing the General Plan to allow building on the Cargill salt ponds.

Silicon Valley Youth Climate Summit a Huge Success
Keynote Speakers were Assemblymember Ash Kalra and Tara Sreekrishnan
De Anza College, Saturday, July 13, 9:30am - 3:00pm
Nothing is more inspiring than 150 youth leaders on climate! It was an honor for Loma Prieta Chapter volunteer leaders Gary Latshaw and David Poeschel, and Chapter Conservation Assistant Dash Leeds to share their knowledge and experience working on climate related issues. Thanks to all the participating organizations and supporting leaders, too numerous to name. And special thanks goes to organizers Hoi Yung Poon, Tara Sreekrishnan, Linda Sell, and Cynthia Kaufman who manage to pull off this fabulous event! We also appreciate the participation of elected officials including Nancy Smith, Sunnyvale City Councilmember, Rod Sinks public page, Dave Cortese, and with an especially thoughtful and inspiring keynote speech from omnipresent Ash Kalra. Now the youthful work begins!

There are many ways to become a local environmental hero!
1. Volunteer by joining one our local conservation teams, or political action teams, or environmental education teams, or outings teams.
2. Volunteer as a Social Media Coordinator
You don't need to be an expert. You'll be provided all content and only need to post on a regular basis. Commitment is 2-3 hrs per week. See all our channels and opportunities listed below.
3. Volunteer as an Environmental Writer/Reporter
Commitment is 2 - 10 hours per week.
The Loma Prieta Chapter has done and is doing an incredible amount of conservation work, but while our conservation activist are busy doing the work, we need reporters to write about it. If you are interested in this impactful opportunity to investigate and explain local conservation, write to chapter.director@lomaprieta.sierraclub.org.
