Last October at the Loma Prieta Chapter's Guardians of Nature Gala, your Chapter Director said these words to our beloved local Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (both in photo below), who immediately responded that local elected officials are able to support and even propose environmental legislation because their constituents promote it because organizations like the Sierra Club educate the public.

Tales of Adventure From Peak Climbing in the Himalaya in Ladakh (Kashmir, India)
March 10, 7:30 - 9:30pm at the Peninsula Conservation Center 3921 E. Bayshore Road, Palo Alto, CA.
At this monthly meeting and slide show of your Chapter's Peak Climbing Section (PCS), view and listen to the tales of Arun Mahajan, a PCS member who joined an expedition from the UK to climb a section of the Himalayas known as "the land of high passes."
They met wonderful locals along the way, passed by beautiful villages, scared off a handful of Bharal (Himalayan Blue Sheep) and were buzzed by a couple Lammergiers.

Join elected leaders, agency staff, ecology and infrastructure experts, and environmental advocates to discuss how to manage our public streets in ways that benefit our communities and ecosystem.

Backpacking Courses
The Loma Prieta Chapter's Backpack Section is offering two classes this spring.
The Lightweight class information is on the Section’s web page.
The Basic Backpacking Course information will appear soon here.
For 2020, the class format will be different. Instead of 8 weeknights, the class will be taught on two Saturdays, April 11 and May 30. Trips will be May 2-3, 16-17, and a weekend in June TBD. |

San Mateo Passes an All-Electric Reach Code
On February 25th, San Mateo County unanimously passed legislation (called a "Reach Code") that requires new buildings to be all-electric. Many thanks to the variety of environmental groups and local advocates, including those from your Loma Prieta Chapter, who fought to pass this law.
San Mateo's new buildings will be gas-free, making them less expensive, healthier, and less polluting!

Because "there could hardly be a much worse location for affordable housing in the urbanized Mid-Coast." Ventana Wilderness Day: Celebrating 20 Years of Wilderness Protection
March 7, 1 - 4pm, 104 West Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley, CA
Join Ventana Wilderness Alliance (VWA) members and allies to discuss the challenges we face in protecting the public lands of northern Santa Lucias.
The program will include a presentation by Leor Pantilat, and adventure runner and photographer, who will talk about the Arroyo Seco Watershed.

Climate Change & Adaptation in San Mateo County
March 14th, 9:30am-12:30pm, 3154 Woodside Road, Woodside California, (Guild Room)
San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine and staff from the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability will speak about flood and sea level rise resiliency:
"Climate change is here, and it poses many risks to the built and natural environment in San Mateo County. Rising temperatures and heat waves, wildfires, extreme storms, sea level rise and coastal erosion are some of the challenges we face."

Mar 22 - 28, Sierra Club Outings: Volunteer on Essential Restoration and Explore the Natural Wildlands of Fort Ord National Monument
For four days, learn from expert botanists and participate in restorations efforts. Possibilities include oak and habitat restoration, native plant landscaping, invasive plant removal, native seed collection, and other restoration activities.
On your day off, enjoy access to a variety of recreation activities, including hiking, scuba diving, whale-watching, horseback riding, kayaking, and visiting historic buildings.
