Support Your Environment
Thanks to Supporters like you, the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club is able to effectively make a difference in the health of the local environment in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Benito Counties. We are dedicated to a vision where we are able to enjoy, explore and protect our beaches, estuaries, urban canyons, watersheds, mountains, forests, and wetlands; promote safe and healthy communities; and encourage solutions to environmental problems in and beyond our counties. For example, with your help we have been able to:
- Empower the residents of San Benito County to ban fracking within the county (Measure J).
- Prevail upon Lehigh Cement to clean up Permanente Creek.
- Provide the impetus to stop the construction of a massive development that would have been sited in sensitive wetlands, and that would be quickly affected by sea-level rise due to the effects of climate change.
- Develop a campaign, led by our Cool Cities Teams, that banned plastic bags in a large number of local cities; and which eventually led to state legislation.
- Promote the implementation of transit oriented developments around major transit centers.
However, we can only achieve our shared vision with your continued help. For instance, going forward we plan to put your assistance to work on:
- Cleaning up Coyote Creek, one of the most polluted creeks in our area.
- Banning fracking in Santa Clara County.
- Supporting the Grand Boulevard vision.
- Promoting the adoption of Community Choice Energy, along with other programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and develop renewable energy.
We have been unusually effective in putting your dollars to work due to our ability to accept both tax deductible and non-tax deductible funding. We put your non-tax deductible dollars to work endorsing candidates for elective office and advocating for legislative issues, we put your tax deductible dollars to work educating our members and the public about environmental issues and training the advocates of the future, and we put your volunteer time and energy to work by providing training and helping you channel your passions into productive and effective environmental action.
