Volunteer Linda Barbosa Reflects on Hiker's Hut

Hikers Hut

Personal Bond

I first became a hike leader after attending a few hikes led by Loma Prieta members.   Another hike leader said they were short of leaders and asked me to volunteer. I care about the earth and know that others will only care about what they experience.  As a leader I also built up my leadership and public speaking skills.

Participation and Effect

Through the Sierra Club I have learned how important it is to advocate on issues we care about.  Over the years I have written numerous letters and emails supporting environmental legislation.

Enduring Commitment

During many years of leading hikes I learned to communicate and handle unusual situations. Most participants were fine but a few presented unique situations. When I could no longer lead hikes I looked to the Sierra Club for other volunteer opportunities.  The Hikers Hut was at the top of my list.

Community Building

I met some of my dearest friends while participating in Sierra Club activities. I hiked up to the Hikers Hut a couple of weeks ago to check on something I had left behind.  It felt like we were far from cities even though it is in the bay area.  The only sounds were the trees and birds.  A really peaceful get away.

Future Outlook

I hope visitors to the Hikers Hut will find a sense of peace while experiencing nature

Togetherness and Legacy

Years ago my husband and I joined an overnight Sierra Club outing to the Hikers Hut.  We took our teenage son along although he was reluctant to attend.

All of us enjoyed the trip, spending quality time with each other and other like minded members of the Sierra Club.  One of my fondest memories is my son playing chess with an elderly gentleman on the porch in front of the Hut.
