Celebrate Earth Day 2023!

By the Sylvanian Staff

Much has been written about Earth Day since it was first held on April 22, 1970, so rather than attempt to write something new about Earth Day and its origins, it seemed better to direct you to two useful resources: the EPA’s history of Earth Day, and the official Earth Day website.

As you might guess, the Sierra Club makes a point of commemorating Earth Day and holding a number of events during the entire month of April, which is considered to be Earth Month.  We’ve provided a list of local community cleanups here, but be aware that some may have slipped past us.  If you know of one, please let us know and we’ll make sure to include it next year.

While community cleanups have become the traditional way to take action during Earth Month, it has also inspired various local activities, including road races, fashion shows, and children’s activities.  We might also benefit from taking some time to recognize the strides that have been made since the day in 1969 that then-Senator Gaylord Nelson saw the need for us as a nation to take care of the world we live in, and note that the spread of Earth Day over the globe has led to 193 countries observing it in some fashion.

Please see our list of Upcoming Events as well as your local group’s list of Community Cleanups and other Earth Month events that you can join.
