Our teams are open to all Pennsylvanians and we are committed to creating inclusive, welcoming spaces where together we advocate for environmental equity. Learn more about Sierra Club’s Equity, Inclusion & Justice journey.

We are looking for volunteers who can:

  • participate in a team or committee for at least two hours a month;
  • are committed to continuing or beginning their personal journey towards fighting for equity and justice;
  • and can work well with others as we fight for clean air, lands, and water and the people who depend on them. Becoming a Sierra Club volunteer can also be a stepping stone on the path to become a volunteer leader, should you be interested in working with us to bring new people into our work.

COVID-19 Note: We have all adapted to an online collaboration environment, which has actually enabled us to connect with friends in parts of Pennsylavnia where it would have been a challenge to hold in-person meetings.

Congratulations to one of our most dedicated leaders, Jim Wylie, on earning the Sierra Club Atlas Award!

Jim has had a major impact in Pennsylvania. From our Chapter Executive Committee, to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Group, from the Digital Tools Team to multiple conservation teams, Jim is truly a #Changemaker.

Chapter Leadership Roles

Chapter (statewide) volunteer leaders provide administrative support for everything that our volunteers do (see below). Including fundraising and budgeting of funds, elections of Group and Chapter executive committees and at-large delegates, outings leader coordination, conservation issues support and leadership, legal action, political and lobby activities, equity training, governance roles, statewide allied organization collaborations, and more.

Regional Groups

Regional Groups organize and support volunteer initiatives locally. Go to the Local Groups page to learn more about Sierra Club organizing in your area.

Our Committees and Teams

Clean energy teams advocate for setting goals, making plans and taking action to transition to 100% renewable energy at the municipal or county level. We have active Ready For 100 programs in Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County, State College, Reading, Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs, and at the state level.

Our Dirty Energy Resistance team fights fracking, pipelines, petrochemical buildout, and related infrastructure at the local, state, and regional level.

Our Public Lands Team protects state parks and forests and works with public officials to ensure that all Pennsylvanians benefit from a healthy thriving planet and a direct connection to nature.

Our Legislative team provides education and insider analysis on bills moving through our state capitol through regular updates and opportunities to connect with your legislator to advocate for the environment and our communities. Key issues we track in Harrisburg include: opposing deregulation and blank checks to the fossil fuel industry, removing barriers to clean energy and pushing for climate action, and ensuring legislators work for the people, not polluters.

Interested in general conservation or a local project in your community? Connect with our Conservation Committee and collaborate with other volunteers across the state working on a variety of issues, including air & water quality, zero waste measures, environmental and social justice, forever chemicals (such as PFAS) smart development, transportation, and more.

Interested in leveraging your activist skills in support of multiple volunteer efforts or learning new skills? Join our Tactics & Support team and assist our teams with digital communications and social media, editing articles for our newsletter, drafting and submitting letters to editors, or co-leading trainings on a variety of skills with other leaders.

Volunteer with our Executive Committee and support our Chapter’s Volunteer Governance structure. These are the volunteers that help keep our organization running and help maintain the platform that allows all of our volunteers and staff to do the work they do. Roles include assisting with financial reports, meeting minutes, conflict resolution, documentation, and internal communications.
