Making a Difference with the Sierra Club: A Volunteer’s Story

By Kelly Forest, Vice Chair, Moshannon Group

From time to time, it is important to share updates on work being done by the groups people support with their time and donations. Recently, I was asked to serve as an at-large delegate for the Sierra Club Pennsylvania Chapter executive committee (I currently serve as the vice-chair, outings chair and Banff Film Festival co-coordinator of the Moshannon Group executive committee). It has been a rewarding experience for me, meeting new people and discussing local environmental issues and local outings, and learning about the workings of the Sierra Club nationally and locally. As we continue to get daily reminders in the news of all the environmental initiatives that our current president is taking away from us, it is more important now to continue to uplift our local environmental commitment to get us through this tumultuous period.

If you have ever thought about volunteering your time to our local Sierra Club, now is the time. Interested in conservation?   We are seeking volunteers to be part of the conservation conversation locally and in Pennsylvania. We have committees that discuss and act on clean energy, dirty energy, transportation, food and agriculture, climate change, zero waste, water quality, air quality and public lands. If you have political interests, we need and want your help to facilitate endorsements for local and state candidates. If you enjoy the outdoors and want to share your love by leading hikes, walks, bike rides, or canoe trips for our area, then outings leader is the place for you.

To learn more about volunteering for the Sierra Club, join Melissa Farr for a virtual volunteer open house on October 23 at 6 pm or on November 13 at noon.  Check out Volunteer With Us | Sierra Club for more information on volunteering and how to sign up.
