Sausalito has 4 football fields and ground parking and an enormous housing shortage. This car-centric development is typical of Marin and has led our residents to be highly car dependent. Car transit causes 40% of Marin's greenhouse gas emissions. Our housing shortage has forced most of our workforce out of the County and into long, environmentally harmful commutes. Compact growth is one of the most important tactics for reducing greenhouse emissions. The Sierra Club created its Urban Infill Policy to support more climate-friendly development patterns.
The Sierra Club Marin Group is committed to supporting the Urban Infill Policy in Marin as a way to both reduce car emissions and address our housing crisis. The Urban Infill Policy covers the following topics
- Infill development: Smart growth that is compact, walkable, and transit-supportive or transit-oriented.
- Housing access for all: This includes the creation of more housing across the full spectrum of affordability, with an emphasis on increasing the supply of deeply affordable housing. The Urban Infill Policy explicitly states that access to affordable housing is a human right and that every neighborhood needs to do its part.
- Active transportation: Any self-propelled, humanpowered mode of transportation, such as walking, bicycling, or rolling.
- Labor: Supporting the right to organize and promote quality union jobs and family-sustaining wages.
To support these goals, we have created a Compact Growth subcommittee that reviews housing, transit and bike infrastructure projects.
