Vermont Sierra Club statement on the Death of a Cyclist Caused by Law Enforcement

The Sierra Club of Vermont sends out our deepest condolences to the family of Sean Hayes, the bicyclist killed in South Burlington while simply adjusting his bicycle on the side of Shelburne Road.  We are even more distressed that the policeman who killed Sean was apparently distracted by a video that was playing in his cruiser when he crashed into and killed Sean and that the officer drove a significant distance before returning to the scene of the crash. It is essential that we in Vermont insist on (a) justice from the legal system in regard to Sean’s death, and (b) better and safer infrastructure for all vulnerable road users.  The solution is not for Vermonters and out-of-state tourists to avoid cycling for fear of motorists.
