Featured Waypoint: Post Rock Country

Lacking wood on the prairies to make posts for stringing barbed wire fences, early settlers in north central Kansas used “fence-post” limestone. When initially quarried, the rock is soft enough to be notched, but hardens when weathered.

There is an 18-mile Post Rock Scenic Byway that includes counties where the Greenhorn limestone formation is close enough to the surface to quarry. The byway extends north and south on K-232, connecting with I-70 on the south and K-18 on the north. Post Rock Scenic Byway, Kansas – Legends of Kansas
