The 2026 midterm election proved to be a historic night for Kansas politics.
While political newcomer Adam Hamilton stole the headlines by becoming the first Democratic U.S. Senator from Kansas in nearly a century, there were key victories for Democrats down the ballot that hold significant implications for state government and the Kansas Legislature.
Equally historic, Cindy Holscher, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate endorsed by the Sierra Club's Kansas Chapter, is holding onto a very narrow 5500-vote lead of over Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson in a race with more than a million votes cast. If Cindy Holscher holds on, I believe this will be the first time ever that Kansans elected back-to-back Democrat Kansas Governors, and the first time we've had back-to-back women Governors. Of course, more ballots have yet to be counted and perhaps a recount is on its way, so stay tuned for official results.
In other news, Kansas elected Democrat Chris Mann as Attorney General, ousting Kris Kobach, although Republicans held on to other state offices: Secretary of State, Insurance Commissioner, and State Treasurer. U.S. Congressional seats remain unchanged.
For the Kansas Legislature, there was a seismic shift toward more balance in the Kansas House of Representatives. Before the election, the KS House was held by a Republican super-majority at 88 Republicans to 37 Democrats. Last night, if unofficial results hold, the balance will be 68 Rs to 57 Ds, a net pickup of 20 seats for Democrats. Several house seats swung around 15 or more points toward Democrats. Of the 125 total Kansas House seats, 88 of the seats were retained by incumbents, including 56 Republicans and 32 Democrats. Thirty-seven lawmakers (30% of the Kansas House) are new or retaking an old seat.
Candidates endorsed by the Sierra Club Kansas Chapter won in 18 of 26 competitive statehouse races.
Election night also proved positive for eco-friendly Senator Silas Miller (D-Wichita), who was elected to the Kansas Senate. We congratulate all the candidates for their effort and interest in serving the people of Kansas.
With the new balance of power in the Kansas Legislature, there exists a promising opportunity for Kansas lawmakers to address important topics, like addressing hyperscale data centers, expanding solar access for homes and businesses, and protecting water. The Sierra Club, a nonpartisan nonprofit environmental group with thousands of dues-paying members and tens of thousands more who take action with us, is excited to work across party lines for solutions to our environmental challenges in Kansas.
