Help Local Badgers and Burrowing Owls Thrive
Midpen is currently conducting a three-year badger and burrowing owl habitat study, which seeks to identify how large their populations are, where they are located, and where they travel. The results of this study will impact local grasslands policies. Volunteers are needed:

Sierra Club Outings: Volunteer on Essential Restoration and Explore the Natural Wildlands of Fort Ord National Monument
For four days, learn from expert botanists and participate in restorations efforts. Possibilities include oak and habitat restoration, native plant landscaping, invasive plant removal, native seed collection, and other restoration activities.
On your day off, enjoy access to a variety of recreation activities, including hiking, scuba diving, whale-watching, horseback riding, kayaking, and visiting historic buildings.

Voice Your Input on Midpen's Wildland Fire Resiliency Program
Midpen is expanding their vegetation management into new areas of their preserves beginning this year, as well as updating their fire preplan maps. They will also be reintroducing prescribed fire to their land management toolbox in 2022.
Opportunity for public comment: Jan 22: The Midpen Board will provide feedback on the project description and scope for the Environmental Impact Report for this project.

New Monthly Loma Prieta Singleaires Outings Program
A new program has been launched to help address the needs of those who want to stay in touch but prefer a slower or easier activity. We’re calling this new program Wednesday Walkers. For now, there will be one Wednesday activity a month. They will be listed in our schedule and on the chapter calendar, but will not be on Meetup, unless the leader requests to list it there. The Wednesday Walkers activity may be a short hike or a cultural visit, and it will usually include a restaurant option for lunch, which any member may attend, whether they have participated in the activity or not. The emphasis is on helping members stay in touch.
Here are the Wednesday Walkers activities In this schedule: Wednesday, December 11, walk on Alviso levees with lunch at Vahls; Wednesday, January 15, tour San Jose City Hall; and Wednesday, February 5, walk on the Los Gatos Creek Trail.

Outings Leadership Training Class for New Leaders! Jan 29, 2020
Aspiring leaders: Do you love nature, and want to share it? Want to lead your friends to new and amazing wonders of nature? Do you want to hone your leadership skills?
Then this is the class for you - Highly Experienced Outings Leaders will share their decades of experience in leading outdoor trips, and apply their knowledge to OLT 101, the Sierra Club’s Basic Leader Training.
This training is mandatory for new leaders who wish to lead any trip that does not require an overnight stay. This covers dayhiking, kayaking, ski trips, etc.

Wilderness First Aid with Bobbie Foster
Saturday, February 1, starting at 8:00am
(16 hours, two days)
Gain some good tools and knowledge on how to handle a wilderness first aid emergency. In addition to a half day of outdoor scenario practice of first aid and leadership skills, this class focuses on practicing skills and treating a variety of injuries.
Successful completion of the class includes a 3 year Wilderness First Aid Certificate.

2019 Recap: California Cities Reject Fracked Methane Gas
On December 17th, Cupertino joined the list of cities taking climate action by requiring new buildings to be all-electric.
This year, more than 20 city and county governments in California have passed laws restricting fracked gas in the construction of new buildings. Gas pipelines constantly leak methane into our atmosphere and pollute our indoor air.
Thank you to all of the amazing activists who have fought for strong climate action in 2019, including the thousands of young people and allies who took to the streets of San Jose on September 20th to demand change. There is much more to do in 2020 and onward!
