Our free Bay 2030 Advocacy Program will empower local residents to become champions for their local environment. This program will give you the tools you need to protect the San Francisco Bay.
You will:
Learn About the Bay by taking part in wildlife and restoration presentations.
Appreciate the Bay during four (socially distanced) Bay outings sessions with Bay experts and outings leaders.
Become an Advocate by learning best practices from our Chapter advocacy veterans. This includes an understanding of environmental laws and how your City functions.
Protect the Bay by engaging in hands-on advocacy actions in the real world!

Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action Presents: Climate Speakers Series with Experts
May 30th - June 7th
Student organizers with Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action have pulled together a great lineup for a new Virtual Climate Speakers Series, beginning May 30th. In partnership with the Office of Supervisor Dave Cortese, De Anza College VIDA, sponsored by Silicon Valley Clean Energy, and supported by key local climate groups including your Loma Prieta Chapter, the series will provide important information from professionals and experts about climate science, solutions to global warming, effective policy making, careers in climate related and more.
The first episode of the virtual Climate Speakers Series will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on May 30. Click here to RSVP and learn more.

Join our Chapter's Sustainable Land Use Committee (SLU) and help us influence urban design and planning in your city for a healthy future.
We will provide you with all the support you need to successfully advocate for healthy and sustainable communities. Experience in urban design, planning, environment, and architecture is helpful but not necessary.
Keen interest is most important!
We meet monthly (currently online), and possibly more often when working on projects and campaigns.

Los Altos, Do You Want to Reduce Housing Costs, Reduce Emissions, and Improve Public Health?
Support the Proposal for an All-Electric Reach Code in Los Altos
Los Altos is considering an all-electric reach code, which is a local law that applies to new construction. The law would require that new buildings be all-electric, preventing the construction of new gas pipelines.
There are many benefits to an all-electric code: A UCLA Department of Environmental Health Sciences study found that by cooking for just 1 hour, gas stoves produce levels of indoor air pollution that would be illegal if recorded outside! New electric induction stoves are healthier, more powerful, and more precise. Fracked methane gas is a major contributor to climate change, and the cost of adding in new gas lines makes gas homes more expensive to build than all-electric homes. In this era of climate change, there is no reason to keep building more gas pipelines.
Please support the all-electric reach code by taking this survey here and telling Los Altos to go "All-Electric".
Also, you can send a short email to the City Council (council@losaltosca.gov) telling them you support the all-electric reach code.

Green Streets for Sustainable Communities Symposium Re-Scheduled for September 23rd
Policy makers, city staff, environmental advocates and experts in all dimensions of streets will be meeting on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 (virtually, or in person if conditions permit) to advance green streets for sustainable communities.

San Mateo County Reopens 13 of its 23 Parks
“We are eager to welcome visitors back to San Mateo County Parks and for them to experience the physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors and on the trails,” said Parks Director Nicholas Calderon. “During this time, it’s critical that park users follow the new rules developed to prevent overcrowding, discourage gatherings and that support social distancing. Let’s work together to ensure that parks are safe environments for everyone.”

Low Risk Activities Permitted and Encouraged in Santa Clara County Parks
From the County website:
"As stewards of Santa Clara County Parks, we are honored to provide a natural respite from the area's shelter in place health order. Together, we have successfully demonstrated the ability to use parks in a safe manner which has provided on-going access to park trails, bathroom facilities and parking lots during the health crisis.
In accordance to the County's Recreation Guidance and Facilities order, we are pleased to announce the reopening of low risk park activities including golf courses, archery ranges and disc golf courses. We are excited to reopen these areas and ask for your continued support in helping us to keep these areas open by abiding by the safety protocols.
- Stay at home if you feel sick or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
- Recreate alone or only with members of your same household.
- Do not use parks or range/course facilities for social gatherings.
- Continue to practice safe social distancing of 6-feet at all times.
- Face masks are strongly urged. You should have one on your person and ready for use."

Stanford Online Hands-on Climate Change Workshop
May 30th & 31st, and June 6th (Sat, Sun, Sat; 10-12:45pm).
This three day weekend workshop course will have students draft their personal climate action plan.
Students will craft their plans by clarifying their intentions, identifying their strongest passions, and working within the realities of their personal and professional lives.
Action plans may be rooted in a desire to set an example of positive change for one’s children, a personal call to action, a craving to make one’s work more meaningful, or a wish to inspire colleagues or an employer to actualize a climate-conscious culture.

Ollie Mayer Hiker's Hut No Longer Taking Reservations
The County of San Mateo, under strict protocol, has closed Sam McDonald Park to overnight camping. The Ollie Mayer Hiker's Hut will also be closed for the duration of this emergency. We are contacting guests who have already paid to arrange for either credit or refund.
We are unsure of availability of Hut reservations for the months of May and June 2020. We are not accepting any further reservations at this time, including July or August. |
