Sierra Club Statement on the Racially Targeted Murders in Georgia
“We will not tolerate anti-Asian hate and violence. Every single one of us -- from our fellow community members to elected officials -- must join together and forcefully denounce it. The pursuits of racial justice and environmental justice are inextricable; we cannot achieve one without the other. The solution is not to further criminalize or police communities of color and immigrant communities, but to invest in transformative justice and cross-racial community building that address the root causes of hate and white supremacy. Whatever our race, our gender, our background, our zip code, we each must be able to exist without fearing for our lives or the lives of our loved ones.”

Basic Backpacking Course (Online for 2021)
Join the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club on Wednesdays in May for a free four-part online symposium on the essentials of backcountry travel that is safe and enjoyable for you, and sustainable for the places you visit. We will place special emphasis on the gear, skills, and planning required to be a responsible steward of our precious wilderness ecosystems.

What's at the Headwaters? Disover it on the Coyote Creek Watershed Tour

Take a peek of the wildlife at the start of Coyote Creek in Henry Coe State Park.
Coyote Creek starts gathering water in the Diablo Foothills, specifically within the region of Henry Coe State Park in Morgan Hill, the largest state park in Northern California. We'll take a look at this open space with wide rolling hills, large oak trees, scrub brush, and of course Coyote Creek's tributaries and more than 200 miles of trails.
As we explore the region in spring in a park, the landscape is covered with lupine and California poppies, bright yellow gold fields and delicate baby blue eyes. We may even encounter some places in the park that were affected by the 2020 lightning fires.
This webinar will feature videos and discussion about the park from various naturalists and admirers of Henry Coe State Park.

Sunnyvale Residents, Make Your City Better
by Engaging in the Moffett Park Specific Plan Update (March 29th, 30th)
Thank you to all of the Sunnyvale residents who took the Community Priorities Survey for the Moffett Park Specific Plan.
There are two upcoming Study Sessions on March 29th and March 30th for the Moffett Park Specific Plan Update. We encourage all Sunnyvale Residents to attend and voice your support for natural areas for open space, such as wetlands, riparian corridors, and habitat areas. You can also ask for increasing the urban canopy and walkable and bike-friendly streets. Sunnyvale should incorporate natural solutions to address the threat of sea level rise.

Free Environmental Storytelling with Linda Yemoto, via Zoom
Saturday, May 8, 10 - 11 am PST
Enjoy a one hour nature-oriented storytelling program by Linda Yemoto via Zoom. She will happily share folktales and personal stories, all connected to the natural world. For over 30 years, Linda was a naturalist with the East Bay Regional Parks. Since the onset of COVID-19, she has been taking part in Zoom storytelling events that are drawing in people from, literally, all over the world.
This program is open to kids and the young at heart. It is sponsored by the Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter, the local face of the national Sierra Club. We offer local members and supporters the opportunity to get involved through outings for all ages and groups.

Join Our New Book Club, Restoring Nature
Do you enjoy exploring ideas on how we can heal our planet and tackle the climate crisis through using nature-based solutions? If so, then you will be interested in joining our new book group, Restoring Nature, organized by Gladwyn d’Souza, Chair of the Loma Prieta Chapter's Conservation Committee.
The first book that we will be reading is “The Reindeer Chronicles.” The author, Judith Schwartz, takes us on an amazing journey to blighted areas around the world where restoration work is underway.
It’s a mesmerizing read that delights, educates, and inspires.
We will share thoughts online as we’re reading the book and at monthly meetings via Zoom on the 3rd Saturday of each month (10 AM). The Zoom meeting on The Reindeer Chronicles will be on April 17th, Saturday, at 10 AM.

Your voice is powerful! Volunteer to influence climate policy in your city or town. Those new to advocacy are welcome; our team will mentor you to help you become an effective local environmental advocate.
Discuss climate strategies in our weekly meetings and collaborate with other volunteers to influence cities and counties to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We are looking for help contacting California Senators and Assemblymembers within San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. Priority bills include the anti - fracking SB 467 and the Cortese building decarbonization package of 3 bills (SB 30, 31 and 32).

From the Sierra Club perspective, the rates would not be increase as much if Valley Water decided to drop it's investment in the Delta Tunnel and Pacheco Reservoir projects. Both of these projects are at high risk for continuing cost escalation and therefore rate increases for decades to come; both will contribute to increased reliance on the Delta; both will have devastating environmental impacts; and both don't pencil out for cost vs. benefit.
Most telling of all, Valley Water has even admitted that the Delta Tunnel/s project will not increase water supply to San Jose residents. |
