The Fall 2026 issue of Sierra, the magazine of the Sierra Club, takes readers to the front lines of Bay Area sea level rise planning. “United Front” explores the complex challenge of preparing communities for rising waters and the unprecedented regional coordination now underway around San Francisco Bay.
New regional sea level rise planning guidelines call on shoreline communities to prioritize nature-based solutions, address groundwater rise and contamination threats, plan for changing conditions through adaptive resilience pathways, and ensure frontline communities have a meaningful voice in decisions about their future.
“United Front” shines a spotlight on the community of East Palo Alto, featuring the nonprofit, community-based organization Nuestra Casa, and Sierra Club’s Bay Alive Campaign. As communities around the Bay begin developing their local sea level rise plans, Bay Alive is working to build informed grassroots participation and advocate for solutions that protect both communities and the Bay for the long term.
