We are excited to announce the 2021 Guardians of Nature Benefit for the Loma Prieta Chapter, this year honoring former Sierra Club California Director Kathryn Phillips for her four decades of environmental leadership. Read more about our honoree Kathryn Phillips here.
Our 2021 celebration will take place on Friday, October 15th, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Warming Already "Baked In" Will Blow Past Climate Goals
The carbon pollution already in the air will push global temperatures to approximately 2.3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This exceeds the Paris Agreement target of 1.5 degrees.
"Just because the world is bound to get more warming than international goals, that doesn’t mean all is lost in the fight against global warming", said Dessler, who cautioned against what he called “climate doomers.”
"If the world gets to net zero carbon emissions soon, 2 degrees of global warming could be delayed enough so that it won’t happen for centuries, giving society time to adapt or even come up with technological fixes", he said.

This study makes evident the need to rapidly transition society from fossil fuels, as carbon dioxide levels reach their highest levels in 4 million years.

Scientists Collaborate: Biodiversity Loss & Climate Change Must Be Tackled Together
Scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) collaborated for the first time on a peer-reviewed workshop report.
"The report finds that previous policies have largely tackled biodiversity loss and climate change independently of each other, and that addressing the synergies between mitigating biodiversity loss and climate change, while considering their social impacts, offers the opportunity to maximize benefits and meet global development goals."
The authors included many positive actions that can benefit biodiversity and reduce emissions, such as Stopping the loss and degradation of carbon--and species--rich ecosystems on land and in the ocean.

Your Loma Prieta Chapter is organizing a network of advocacy teams at the city level—these are city-focused teams with the twin goals of spearheading actions to combat climate change and to conserve and restore natural habitats.
You will be working with city council members, key city staff, county officials, and other environmental activists. We welcome and educate those who are new to climate policy.
