Sat April 29th Peoples Climate March
PeoplesClimateMarchApril292017

Donald Trump and his band of climate deniers in his Cabinet and in the Congress want to turn the country back to a reliance on climate disrupting dirty fossil fuels by killing the Clean Power Plan and the Paris Climate Accord. But the people in this country and around the world aren't buying it.

Join the MD Sierra Club in taking a stand for our communities and climate on April 29th in DC. Get on a bus or join a group on Metro near you!

Thank you to the hundreds and hundreds of SierraClub members and supporters who commented to NOAA in support of Alternative D for the Proposed Mallow Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary in Maryland! The comments in favor of this more inclusive sanctuary soared thanks to your response. By midnight at the comment deadline on March 30th, a total of 1,069 comments had been submitted!

We hope this proposal to have the first National Marine Sanctuary in almost 20 years and the first ever for the Chesapeake Bay will come to Maryland. We applaud the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration for this wonderful opportunity recognize the tidal Potomac River and we entreat our federal and state elected officials to support NOAA and it's mission.

Recent Activities: W. MD Social & Hodgepodge Hike & Chat!
Western MD hike

Western MD has been buzzing with activities post-fracking ban! On Wednesday, April 5th, 35 wonderful folks met at a social event for drinks, celebration of the fracking ban, brainstorming for future activities and issues to address, and general chit chat. 3 days later, on April 8th, 13 awesome people showed up to the Hodgepodge Hike & Chat at New Germany State Park.  Unfortunately, no wildflowers were blooming at the time, but we still learned about the park and we enjoyed the company of great folks taking in the scenic beauty in Western Maryland! More events are on the horizon, so like our FB page to get updates!

Invasive Plant Removal at Magruder Park in Hyattsville
May Invasive plant removal at Magruder park

We are currently reaching the point of the year where deer tick season is the worst. If you wish to lead hikes, we recommend to hike in areas with good deer control, and to do so from mid-July through mid-April when the seasonal risk of Lyme disease is less. Read our most recent blog and tick and lyme disease page to plan safe outdoor trips.

Human Rights Are Key to Saving the Planet
SC stands with immigrants
Immigrants' rights partners are organizing nationwide rallies on May 1 to support immigrants and resist Trump's deportation machine. At our partners' invitation, the Sierra Club is supporting the rallies to make clear that a broad, diverse movement stands united in resisting Trump's anti-immigrant policies. The day of action is part of a coordinated weekend of resistance that includes the People's Climate March on April 29. Two days after you show up to protest Trump's attacks on our climate take a stand against Trump's attacks on immigrant families, who often disproportionately bear the brunt of climate change. Find a rally happening near you!
