Meet the Fall 2018 Interns

Every season the Maryland Sierra Club welcomes a new group of interns to help us with our important work of protecting the environment.  Here are the fall 2018 interns.

Semir Abdul hikingSemir Abdul

Our transportation intern is from Greenbelt, MD, and is a senior at UMBC, majoring in Environmental Science. He loves martial arts and everything involving movement. You can probably find him learning a new discipline or dancing to all kinds of music. His favorite outdoor activities are bioenergetic training, yoga, meditation, soccer, running, hiking, gardening, playing instruments, and napping. He chose to intern with the Sierra Club because he wishes to gain a greater sense of what it’s like to take action on environmental issues.

Harlan DobsonHarlon Dobson

Our energy intern! is from Pittsgrove, NJ, and is a junior at the University of Maryland, majoring in Government and Politics. A fun fact about him is that he was once in the PLO headquarters during a power outage. His favorite outdoor activity is running. He’s also a big Eagles fan. He chose to intern with the Sierra Club to see how his skills can be used to make effective change in environmental issues, and learn more about how NGO’s work.

Yushi HuYushi Hu

Our stewardship intern is from Luoyang, China, and is a graduate student at the University of Maryland, majoring in Public Administration. In her free time she loves swimming and her favorite outdoor activity is hiking. She chose to intern with the Sierra Club to learn more about current environmental issues and gain hands on experience working for an environmental non-profit.

Ari NeugeborenAri Neugeboren

One of our political intern is from Bethesda, MD, and is a sophomore at the University of Maryland, double majoring in Government and Politics and Broadcast Journalism. He loves watching football, basketball, and going to concerts. His favorite way to spend time outdoors is golfing. He chose to intern with the Sierra Club because he believes it is vital for college students to be proactive and get involved with current political issues, such as climate change.

Anna PowellAnna Powell

Our communications intern is from Easton, MD, and is a junior at the University of Maryland, majoring in Environmental Science and Policy. She loves traveling and exploring new places with her friends. Her favorite outdoor activities are going to be beach and hiking. Here she is pictured hiking at Hawksbill Mountain in Virginia and the Billy Goat Trail in Maryland. She chose to intern with the Sierra Club because she wanted to see how a grassroots organization can effect change on a national level.

Our conservation outings intern is from Glenwood, MD, and is a junior at the University of Maryland, majoring in Environmental Science and Policy. In her free time she loves going to concerts, playing with dogs, and baking. Some of her favorite outdoor activities are hiking, swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. She chose to intern with the Sierra Club because she wants to get real life experience with an environmental organization. 

Kieran RudgeKieren Rudge

Our energy and transportation intern is from Larchmont, NY, and is a senior at Johns Hopkins University, majoring in Environmental Science. In his free time he loves music and playing the drums, playing ultimate frisbee for his school’s team, and longboarding. His favorite outdoor activities are hiking, swimming, going to the beach, biking, and bouldering. Here he is pictured at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego and hiking in Durango, Colorado. He chose to intern with the Sierra Club because he is very interested in the energy and transportation work being done and wants to help in the fight against fossil fuel energy production.

One of our political intern is from Catonsville, MD, and is a sophomore at the University of Maryland, majoring in Environmental Science and Policy. In her free time she plays on a club frisbee team and likes to read historical novels. A fun fact is that she has never been stung by a bee. Her favorite outdoor activities are hiking and swimming. She chose to intern with the Sierra Club because she wants to get involved and make a difference in local environmental issues.

Our administrative assistant intern is from Bethesda, MD, and is a senior at the University of Maryland, majoring in Environmental Science and Policy. In her free time she loves going to the gym, yoga, and playing volleyball. Her favorite outdoor activities are hiking and running. Here she is pictured in the Swiss Alps. She chose to intern with the Sierra Club because she is passionate about sustainability.
