Tell the Board of Public Works: NO to I-495 & I-270 expansion
The Board of Public Works is expected to vote yet again to green-light the new sequencing of the I-495 and I-270 widening scheme. State Comptroller Peter Franchot is the crucial swing vote on the 3-member Board of Public Works. Send him an email now at pfranchot@comp.state.md.us and tell him this proposal and process is deeply flawed and will bring harm to our air, water, climate, and communities. We need  Clean transportation for all and forward thinking 21st century transportation solutions

Help pass key environmental bills in the 2020 General Assembly!
Contact Legislative Chair mark.posner@mdsierra.orgFor the 2020 session, we are again planning an all-out effort to pass our priority bills & many other important environmental bills. To do this, we need your help! Keep an eye on our website for volunteer opportunities & grassroots actions. Email Legislative Chair, Mark Posner, mark.posner@mdsierra.org for more information.

Our 2020 priority bills include: ending coal-burning in  Maryland (retiring the state’s six coal plants, with a just transition for workers & communities); requiring the Public Service Commission to mitigate climate change in its electricity decisions; banning most disposal plastic shopping bags and imposing a fee on other bags; & advancing clean transportation (by closing the funding gap for Baltimore public transit & MARC; & reforming the public-private funding mechanism Governor Hogan is seeking to rely upon to massively expand highways).
Congratulations To Maryland Sierra Club Staff Moving To New Roles!
We’ve had some big changes in the Maryland Sierra Club staffing. Earlier this year our long-time policy director David Smedick took a great job at the National Sierra Club. Last month, Beyond Coal organizer Matt Dernoga took a job on Capitol Hill. And this November, Conservation Organizer Zack Gerdes accepted a position with National Sierra Clubs New Economy Program! Please join us in congratulating everyone on their new journeys. We wish all of them the best in their transition to new and exciting roles in the Climate Movement! It has been an amazing opportunity to work with Zack, Matt, & David.
Surprise... the Sierra Club is a Democracy!
See our MD Sierra Club Leader candidate statements...with all the challenges and potential of a democracy. And democracy requires participation. If you are a dues paying member, please vote online or by hard copy ballot by December 15th. Some races are contested, some are not, but this is a great opportunity for you to find out about the Sierra Club members who are willing to step up to lead and serve on Sierra Club Executive Committees in Maryland.    Read  Candidate Statements with instructions for voting here
