FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Riverdale, MD - Sierra Club Maryland Chapter has announced that Chapter Chair Rosa Hance of Great Mills, MD, has been honored as Sustainable Growth Leadership & Service Award Recipient by the Maryland Department of Planning.

The leadership and service award is given annually for activities or accomplishments that advance public appreciation, understanding or involvement in promoting smart growth and sustainable communities at the state, regional, or local level.

Senator Arthur Ellis nominated Rosa Hance in the leadership and service category along with several other organizations receiving recognition today in other categories, such as the Velocity Center, J.C. Parks Elementary School and an honorable mention for leaders in the Southern Maryland Rapid Transit Project. “Thank you for everything you do for our community.” said Ellis at the virtual award ceremony held today via webinar.

“It is an honor to be recognized alongside Greg Bowen in the Leadership and Service award  and so many wonderful leaders in organizations and local government and communities.” said Rosa Hance. “Thank you very much to Senator Arthur Ellis for nominating me for the leadership and service award and for joining the Southern Maryland Sierra club in the Bensville Park for our most recent tree planting where we reached 300 trees planted in local parks. It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the Maryland Department of Planning because the 12 visions truly encompass what it means to thrive in a sustainable community.”

“Resourcefulness, innovation, and creativity are all part of what makes Maryland a leader in cultural preservation, community and economic development, and environmental stewardship,” said Maryland Department of Planning Secretary Robert McCord said in a statement. “I congratulate all of the winners for their efforts that not only demonstrate how we should look at the built and the natural environment, they help to revitalize and improve the quality of life in their communities.”

Rosa adds that no one works alone. “I'd like to thank the amazing volunteers and staff of the Maryland Chapter of the Sierra Club who I work with and the many different wonderful organizations and coalitions that I'm proud to collaborate with. With partners like the NAACP and the Maryland Campaign of Environmental Human Rights, it is a joy and pleasure to advocate for an amendment to the state constitution to ensure the right to a healthful environment is protected for all Marylanders.”
