Maryland Chapter Newsletter

Dear Maryland,

It’s getting down to the last few weeks of the state legislative session and we need All Hands on Deck for Climate Action. It’s Spring - come enjoy the Great Outdoors! Cherish the new and old and join in. See opportunities below...

Contact your legislators for a strong Clean Energy Jobs Act Today!

Solar Panels Maryland has the opportunity with the Clean Energy Jobs Act to increase the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) to 50% by 2030, with a plan for 100% clean energy by 2040.

The legislation passed in the MD Senate overwhelmingly and is now being considered in the House. Contact legislators to support a strong Clean Energy Jobs Act as soon as possible.

If you want to volunteer to help get members in critical districts to contact their legislators, contact Matt Dernoga at matt.dernoga@mdsierra.org.

Act Now to Protect Maryland from Increased Polluting Highway Congestion
Traffic congestion and pollutionGov. Hogan is proposing an $11 billion plan to add hundreds of miles of new lanes to I-270 and I-495, which will encourage more people to drive, increasing traffic congestion and the number of polluting cars on the road.

Support an urgent bill to prevent the Governor from rushing into a 50 year contract.

Tell your legislators to support HB 1091 Sign our petition here!

Good News for the Land and Water Conservation Fund
On February 14th the Senate passed a bill that ensures that America's most sucessful Land Conservation Program will continue  and on March 12th, the LWCF was permanently reauthorized, as part of a public lands package signed into law by President Trump with overwhelming bipartisan support, see LWCFCoalition Press Release. The Maryland Sierra Club and supporters like you played a key role in this victory by visiting DC and contacting your members of Congress to persuade them to restore funding to the LWCF. Thank you!

Tell the Public Service Commission: No Fracked Gas Power Plants in MD - April 1-4

The old Crane coal-fired electricity plant retired in June 2018 when operators (PJM) agreed it was no longer needed for electricity in the region. Now, PJM is seeking a permit to reopen this old  polluting facility as a “peaker plant”, using dangerous, fracked gas. It would spew high levels of toxic emissions even when air quality is already poor on very hot days. Asthma-related hospitalization rates in Baltimore city are already nearly three times the U.S. average. Comment until April 4th: Tell the PSC: No fracked gas power plants in our Community! And if you are able to, join us at the  Monday April 1st hearing
Montgomery County Beyond Coal Meeting Sunday April 14th
Beyond Coal House Party FlierDid you know Maryland still has six coal fired power plants, including the Dickerson plant in Montgomery County?

Join us for a conversation about how we can move Maryland Beyond Coal. Our coal power plants still produce 9 million metric tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to nearly 2 million passenger vehicles.

The Sierra Club is undertaking a coal community transition campaign to retire the remaining coal fleet in the next decade, while ensuring there is funding to support impacted workers and communities. Learn more about this exciting campaign, and how you can be involved RSVP HERE
Free Film Reinventing PowerTuesday April 30th in Ellicott City
